You know what they say, “Change can be as good as a holiday” (but I’m sure you’ll admit, nothing beats being on holidays…). If change can really be as good as swimming in the infinity pool of your lush Balinese accommodation, then I’m here for it. And often shaking things up in your business can give you the breath of fresh air you’ve been looking for. The same is true for your website. So when is it a good time to redesign it?

When to redesign your website: The telltale signs

Over time you’ll get a feel for when it’s time to redesign your website. The situations detailed below are some telltale signs that change is on the forecast.

You’re not attracting the right people

Whether you have changed your services or redefined the ideal client you love to work with, it means your current website is no longer resonating with the right people. Want to be seen as more professional or to attract more professional clients? A website redesign can really do wonders.

It’s a sign: It’s time to redesign your website.

Things that can help with the process:

  • Working with a copywriter or copy coach to finetune the wording for your new service or how to write for your new target audience.
  • Teaming up with a graphic designer to lift your branding to match your new positioning.
  • Collaborating with a web designer to bring it all together in a logical and engaging way.

You have new branding

Getting new branding is a key driver of redesigning your website. With your new logo, colour palette and graphics, it’s the perfect time to give your website the makeover it deserves.

I’ve been through this process with my own brand. My advice: Don’t dump your new branding in your current website and assume it’ll all still fit together and work. Your new  branding will call for a whole new look and feel for your website so don’t skip this step.

It’s a sign: It’s time to redesign your website.

Things that can help with the process:

You shudder at the thought of sending people to your website

I’ve had clients in the past tell me that they didn’t even have their website link in their Instagram profile. “I really don’t want anyone seeing it. It’s such a mess.” – they would tell me.

Is this you too? Maybe you DIYed your website years ago. Or you’ve been adding more and more pages to your website over the years. You’ve known for a while that your website is confusing and lacks clarity. None of that does a good job of showcasing you or your services.

It’s a sign: It’s time to redesign your website.

Things that can help with the process:

  • Working with a graphic designer to design your logo and supporting branding elements, such as your colour palette and other graphics.
  • Getting professional headshots or a branding photoshoot so that you have unique and engaging images to work with.
  • Teaming up with a copywriter or copy coach to help clarify your message and positioning of your services.
  • Collaborating with a web designer to bring it all together in a logical and engaging way.

How often should I redesign my website?

You may be surprised to hear that a website’s shelf life is 2 years and 7 months. I know, that’s quite specific! But it also makes sense with how fast things move and change on the online landscape.

How often you decide to redesign your website isn’t such an arbitrary thing. Over time it’ll become clear that it’s no longer working as well as it should and that it’s time for a change. And that change will be as good as a holiday.

Here’s to more confidence, more clarity and more leads from your ideal clients.
