Got website envy? Here’s why the real work happens before the website redesign

We’ve all been there.

You’re scrolling online, land on someone’s website, and immediately think: “Oof. Their site is SO good. Why doesn’t mine look like that?”

That, my friend, is website envy. And yes—it’s definitely a thing.

Before you spiral into a Google search for “best website templates” or start playing design musical chairs on Canva, let’s pause for a reality check. Because the website you’re admiring? It didn’t just happen overnight.

You’re looking at the finished product. After the brand strategy sessions, messaging tweaks, professional photoshoots, content planning, and a web designer who tied it all together.

It’s like admiring a dream home without seeing the months of reno chaos that went into it.

Your website is a reno project, not a weekend DIY

Let’s put it this way: you wouldn’t gut your kitchen without checking if the plumbing works, right?

Same goes for your website.

A good-looking site with no strategy behind it is like marble benchtops on dodgy cabinets—shiny, but not very functional. And eventually, something’s going to break (probably your sales funnel).

So if your current site feels a little meh, don’t jump straight into choosing fonts and colours just yet. The magic happens in the prep work.

What needs to happen before you redesign your website?

If you’re dreaming of a site that not only looks great but actually works, here’s what needs to be rock solid first:

1. Business Foundations

  • What exactly are you offering?
  • Who are you speaking to?
  • What do you want your site visitors to do?

Until you’re clear on this, your website will be trying to do too many things for too many people—and that never ends well.

2. Goals

Is your site meant to:

  • Book new clients?
  • Sell products?
  • Build your mailing list?

Let’s make sure your blueprint matches your end goal. Because without goals, a website is just a pretty placeholder.

3. Messaging

Your copy should:

  • Be clear
  • Be compelling
  • Sound like you

And most importantly, it should speak directly to the people you want to work with or sell to.

4. Visuals

Think:

  • Brand identity that reflects your values and vibe
  • Photography that builds trust and shows who you are
  • Graphics that support—not confuse—your message

And please, don’t just chase what’s trending on Instagram or Canva. Your brand deserves better.

What happens if you skip these steps?

Short answer? You’ll end up with a website that looks good… but doesn’t actually do anything.

Kind of like those ‘90s screensavers—nice to look at, but not exactly productive.

The truth is, a high-impact website is equal parts strategy and style. The design is important, but it should be the final layer—built on top of a clear plan, strong message, and a solid understanding of your business.

Feeling that website envy? Use it as fuel.

If you’re looking at someone else’s site and thinking, “Why doesn’t mine look like that?”—take it as a sign. Not to panic or rush into a redesign, but to step back and do the real work first.

Get clear.
Get organised.
Then design.

That’s where I come in. If you’re at the early stages of a website redesign (or even just thinking about one), let’s chat. I’ll help you figure out what to focus on first so you can feel confident and prepared when you’re ready to work with a web designer.

And be kind to yourself. That website you envied? I bet they started exactly where you are now. With questions, ideas, and a whole lot of sticky notes.
