I get it. It can be hard to know where to start with so many things in business. The same is true for blogging. With some top tips for beginners though, you’ll soon be on your way to writing a library of valuable blog posts.

Why is blogging important?

The Personal Benefits of Blogging

Writing regular blog posts is really a chance for some quality contemplative time between you and your business. It’s a chance to capture a moment in time and share with others what inspires you, what lessons you have learned recently, what questions you’ve answered many times. The list goes on. This reflective time is important to release some of the information and ideas that you’re storing inside, thereby allowing more space for future ideas and new perspectives. So much of our daily life is ‘doingness’. Make sure you allow time for reflection.

The Business Benefits of Blogging

On a business level, blogging is invaluable. It adds so much more worth to your website, more engagement from visitors and a greater insight into who you are as a business professional. Writing posts that focus on keywords does wonders for your SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and blogging keeps your website content (another SEO tick of approval for Google rankings).

You are also giving information away for free, which your audience will greatly appreciate and won’t go unnoticed.

Blogging tips

So now onto the tips for effective blog writing:

  • Write posts based on common questions that you get asked about your product / service / industry
  • Write posts about topics that inspire you, that are perhaps a little controversial and that will get your reader thinking
  • Write posts that include your keywords
  • Write posts at regular intervals. This depends on you and how much you like writing. Once a month is really the minimum interval and if you feel inspired, write more frequently, such as fortnightly or weekly.

After your blog post is published

After you have written and published your blog post, what to do next? There’s a list of actions that come next to help get your blogs out to your audience.

  • Announce your latest blog post on your favourite social media pages, such as Facebook, Instagram, etc.
  • Write a short email newsletter that includes an intro to your blog post and invite your subscribers to read it on your website
  • Send your blog post to online journals within your industry to be published. This option is recommended if you feel that your blog post is worth sharing to a larger audience. Ensure that the online journal includes a brief bio about you and a link to your website
  • Start working on your next post 🙂 Try to be proactive with your writing. Create a list of other topics you would like to explore in the future.

And if you’re wondering: Yes, people still read blog posts. Especially when you google something and go to a blog post for the answer. Blog posts I’ve published years ago, still rank well on Google. And blogs are a great way to demonstrate your authority within your industry.

And my top tip: Just get started. Blogging as a beginner can be daunting but getting started is the first step to finding your momentum with it.
